How Long Should You Persevere For?
What happens if you have been persevering with a goal for a long time and you do not seem to be getting closer to achieving it? Should you grit your teeth and stick it out or abandon it in favour of something new? Well that depends...
If it is a goal that still excites you when you think about it and you are adamant you want this goal complete, then yes it is definitely worth persevering for. If this is the case then it is worth reviewing the course of action you are currently taking.
If what you are currently doing is not yielding you any results it's time for you to re-think your plan. Sit down and brainstorm as many different ways you can come up with to achieve your goal. And settle on one that most appeals to you. You will know if you have set off on the right path if you start seeing results.
Sometimes just starting on a new path can cause another path to make itself known to you that is even better (and one that you had never considered). Being flexible is in order here. Being too rigid can shut you off from a considerably easier and potentially quicker path.
If your goal doesn't excite you anymore and you have mixed feelings whether you even want to complete this goal, then it is probably not worth persevering with. If this applies to you then it is time to think about and set a new goal.
Often just shifting the focus of your goal slightly can inject more excitement into it. Or if this doesn't work, it's time for an entirely new goal with an entirely new focus. This is not a bad thing if you do have to do this. Do not beat yourself up for failing to complete the goal.
Honestly it is no good flogging a dead horse. Cutting your losses and starting anew is probably the best in this case. A new beginning brings new promise and new motivation. It's important you feel naturally inspired about your goal. This feeling is not something you should have to fake.
Ultimately our emotions determine whether you should persevere with your goal or not. Pay attention to what you are feeling. If you are still feeling excited and happy about your goal, keep it. If you feel burdened and despondent about your goal, it's time for a new one.
